Tailwind Wine Velvet Ribbon Button

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: both nap layers and their cross-fade, the foil gradient and clip, the wrapper's relational lift, the reserved tail padding, every state. CSS: the ribbon polygon (with its tracing warning), the pile texture, and the -webkit-text-fill-color the clip needs.
  • The nap cross-fade is one of the few effects in the collection that is more readable as utilities: two sibling spans, identical except for the gradient angle and which opacity they start at. In CSS it was four rules across two selectors.
  • group-focus-within: rather than group-focus-visible: here, because the focusable element is the button itself and the sheen layers are its children — the wrapper's has-focus-visible: handles the ring, and focus-within covers the sheen without a second group name.
  • A11y fix from the CSS original: the foil gradient's darkest stop (#a67c30) against the wine measured ≈3.4:1 on the lower third of the glyphs. The port lifts the wine's mid tone slightly in the gradient (50% stop rather than a darker blend) and keeps the bevel shadow, bringing the darkest measured band to ≈4.6:1.

How this works

Velvet's signature is angle-dependent brightness. One gradient cannot do it; two cross-faded ones can:

<!-- rest -->  bg-[linear-gradient(78deg,…)]  opacity-100 group-hover:opacity-0
<!-- hover --> bg-[linear-gradient(-78deg,…)] opacity-0   group-hover:opacity-100

Trace a ribbon polygon before you trust it. Across the top, down the right tail, up into its notch, back along the band's underside, then the mirror. If the path crosses itself you get stray wedges, and nonzero filling makes the result look deliberate but wrong.

The label's bottom padding is structural. The band is only the top 58% of the box; without pb-[2.1rem] the label centres on the whole box and lands in the notches.

Make it yours

  • --color-tb35-wine plus its two derived tones: forest green, navy and aubergine all work.
  • Deepen the notch by raising the apex points toward the band; lengthen the tails by raising the underside from 58%.
  • Silver foil: shift the label gradient to cool greys.
  • Remove the notch points entirely for a flat velvet plaque.
  • The pile texture's two micro-gradients are in CSS — change their alphas for a shorter or longer nap.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • Gradient-clipped text needs a solid color first, or the label vanishes where the clip is unsupported.
  • Dark fabric plus gold type sits near the 4.5:1 line. Check the darkest gold stop, not the average.
  • clip-path removes shadows — the lift comes from a wrapper filter.
  • Reserve the tail area with padding. The band is not the box.
  • Cross-fading two full-size layers is cheap; a third pushes hover into repaint territory.
