What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: the panel, the lens box, the digit cells, the press, focus, and the sr-only live region. CSS: all 21 bars — two chamfer polygons, eight position rules and the lit state.
  • This is the most CSS-heavy port in the collection, and correctly so. Seven segments × three digits is 21 elements whose only differences are edge, axis and offset. Utilities would mean 21 class lists of 90 characters each, differing in one token — which is not "styling in the markup", it is copy-paste with extra steps.
  • The one port change that is an improvement: data-on replaces classList.toggle('is-on'). It reads as state in devtools, and it pairs with data-[on=true]: variants if you later want to style a digit from its markup.
  • Three alpha tokens for the bloom (on, on-60, on-30) instead of inline color-mix(). Same trade as the neon button: slightly more tokens, dramatically more readable glow.

## JavaScript
```js
(() => {
  const btn = document.querySelector('.tb-36__btn');
  if (!btn) return;
  const MAP = { 0:'abcdef', 1:'bc', 2:'abdeg', 3:'abcdg', 4:'bcfg', 5:'acdfg', 6:'acdefg', 7:'abc', 8:'abcdefg', 9:'abcdfg' };
  const digits = [...btn.querySelectorAll('.tb-36__digit')];
  const live = btn.querySelector('.tb-36__live');
  let value = 0;
  const render = () => {
    const text = String(value % 1000).padStart(digits.length, '0');
    digits.forEach((d, i) => {
      const lit = MAP[text[i]] || '';
      d.querySelectorAll('.tb-36__seg').forEach((s) => { s.dataset.on = String(lit.includes(s.dataset.s)); });
    });
    live.textContent = String(value % 1000);
  };
  btn.addEventListener('click', () => { value += 1; render(); });
  render();
})();
```

How this works

The lookup table is the whole controller. Seven segments per digit, a bitmask string per numeral, and one attribute toggle:

const MAP = { 0:'abcdef', 1:'bc', 2:'abdeg', 3:'abcdg', 4:'bcfg',
              5:'acdfg', 6:'acdefg', 7:'abc', 8:'abcdefg', 9:'abcdfg' };
segs.forEach(s => s.dataset.on = String(lit.includes(s.dataset.s)));

The port swaps the CSS version's classList.toggle('is-on') for a data-on attribute, which reads better in devtools and pairs with data-[on=true]: variants.

Unlit segments stay faintly visible. That is what makes it look like LEDs behind a lens rather than text appearing from nowhere — the off colour is a real token, not transparent.

The bar geometry stays CSS. Twenty-one bars share two chamfer polygons and eight position rules; as utilities that would be twenty-one near-identical class lists differing by one edge.

Make it yours

  • --color-tb36-on is the LED: red for vintage, amber for avionics, green for lab gear.
  • Add digits by copying a digit block — the JS pads automatically.
  • Slow the switch to 120ms for a lazier, older display.
  • Bright lens instead of smoked: raise the panel lightness and lower the bloom's third layer.
  • The unlit token at 6–10% of the lit one is the sweet spot.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • A glowing readout is not accessible text. The live region does the real work.
  • Segment displays render digits and a handful of letters. Never arbitrary copy.
  • Unlit segments must stay visible or the numbers teleport.
  • Glow via box-shadow on 21 elements is fine; blur-* on each would not be.
  • Keep the button's hit area large — the digits are decoration inside it.
