What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: the tilt transform, the cut corner, the index printing, the sheen's opacity states, the drop shadows, the reduced-motion reset. CSS: the card stock, the sheen gradient, the pointer defaults, and the intersected hole mask.
  • Third pointer-driven demo (after 15 and 29) and the same division every time: JS writes variables, utilities read them, defaults live in CSS. Worth stating as the collection's rule for interactive effects — the controller never touches a class or a style property other than a custom property.
  • motion-reduce:[transform:none] has to be an arbitrary property because the transform itself is one. It is the correct escape hatch: you cannot reset a composed arbitrary transform with transform-none alone in every ordering.
  • A11y fix from the CSS original: two colours were under par on the card stock — --print:#6d8f86 at ≈2.9:1 (the column indices) and --accent:#b4562f at ≈3.5:1 (the footer line). The port darkens them to oklch(0.52 0.06 175) (≈4.6:1) and oklch(0.47 0.13 40) (≈5.3:1), which also reads more like real card printing.

How this works

The holes are a real mask. You can see the page through them, which is the entire point of the object — and it is why the mask is intersect: a column rhythm crossed with two row bands leaves holes only where both agree.

Tilt and sheen read the same two variables. That is the detail that makes 3D tilts believable: a highlight that does not track the lean reads as a sticker.

transform: perspective(760px)
  rotate3d(var(--ty),var(--tx),0,var(--tilt))
  translate3d(calc(var(--tx) * 6px), calc(var(--ty) * -6px), 0);

Keyboard users get an untilted card and a focus ring, and motion-reduce: drops the transform entirely — the same contract as every pointer-driven demo here.

Make it yours

  • Hole pitch and size are the repeating gradient's stops; keep the gap wider than the hole.
  • Add punched rows by adding bands to the row mask.
  • --tb-50-tilt-max: 7–10° is convincing.
  • --color-tb50-print — IBM cards used pale blue-green; Univac used buff.
  • The cut corner is one polygon point pair; deepen it for a different vendor's card.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • rotate3d on text softens glyph rasterisation. Small angles, and never animate during text entry.
  • Masked holes make the button partially transparent — never over busy artwork.
  • Tilt must be pointer-only. A keyboard user should never see the card move.
  • perspective() inside transform applies per element; nest tilted elements and you need perspective on the parent instead.
  • Pointer listeners on a tilted element fire against the untransformed box. Don't compute hit maths from the visual position.

Multi-layer mask + mask-composite need Chrome 120 / Safari 15.4 / Firefox 53. Without mask support the holes are not punched, but the card, tilt and sheen all work.
