What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: the layout, all the type, the red rule on after:, the stamp's rotation, overshoot easing and arrival, the lift. CSS: the aged stock, the serrated tear mask, and the stamp's intersect-composited ink speckle.
  • ease-[cubic-bezier(0.2,1.6,0.4,1)] as a utility is a small but real gain: the overshoot control point is the thing you tune to make the stamp land harder or softer, and it now sits next to the scale it overshoots.
  • This demo and the boarding pass use opposite mask composites for opposite reasons — exclude to punch holes through a piece, intersect to keep only where two layers agree. Both are in CSS, and both carry the reason in a comment.
  • A11y fix from the CSS original: the dose line was color-mix(in oklab, ink 82%, paper) — roughly 4.1:1 on the amber stock. The port names it --color-tb43-ink-soft at oklch(0.36) (≈6.3:1). It is the line carrying the actual instructions.

How this works

Three things together make it read as rubber: rotation, a hard 2px border, and uneven ink. Miss any one and it looks like rotated text with a box around it.

The serrated top edge is a two-layer mask — a thin strip of conic triangles unioned with a base covering everything below. Keeping the tooth layer to its own 0.35rem strip (rather than letting one gradient cover the box) is what makes it predictable across engines, and that is why it stays in CSS with the note attached.

The impact easing is a utility, and deliberately so: cubic-bezier(0.2,1.6,0.4,1) is a value a designer tunes, sitting on the element that overshoots.

Make it yours

  • Stamp word and colour: the label text and --color-tb43-stamp. "VOID", "PAID" and "COPY" all read correctly.
  • Serration size is the mask's .7rem tile — larger teeth read as a coarser tear.
  • --color-tb43-paper: pale green reads as a 1970s prescription.
  • Remove the foxing blotches for a clean modern pharmacy look.
  • The red rule is an after: pseudo-element — thicken it for a bolder setting.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • Typewriter faces have wide sidebearings; tracking needs to go slightly negative or the label looks airy.
  • A rotated stamp over text reduces legibility. Keep opacity below 0.9 and clear of the primary line.
  • Overshoot easings on scale clip inside overflow-hidden — give the container padding.
  • Never encode meaning only in the stamp. Add real text if the state matters.
  • Don't imply real medical information in production UI. This is a visual style, not a prescription component.

conic-gradient masks need Chrome 120 / Safari 15.4 / Firefox 83. Without mask support the top edge is straight and everything else is unchanged.
