What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: the mask, the flood scale and origin, the colour crossover with its per-property delay, the growing rule on after:, every state including group-disabled:hidden. CSS: tokens, the stage's paper wash, and the -webkit-mask-image shim.
  • This is the second demo needing [transition-delay:0ms,100ms] (after the ghost button). Two occurrences in nineteen demos is roughly the right frequency for that escape hatch: staggered crossovers are a real technique, and delay-* genuinely cannot express them.
  • group-disabled:hidden on the ink layer replaces .btn:disabled .ink{display:none}. Small, but it is the pattern for every "parent state hides a decorative child" rule in the collection.
  • A11y fix from the CSS original: the disabled label computed to color-mix(in oklab, ink 45%, paper) — about 2.9:1 on the cream stock. The port names it --color-tb19-ink-off at ≈4.6:1. A disabled control still has to be readable.

How this works

A feathered mask is what separates ink from a rectangle. Three stops — solid, half, transparent — mean the growing edge is soft and slightly irregular rather than a hard circle:

class="[mask-image:radial-gradient(58%_120%_at_50%_112%,
  #000_38%,rgba(0,0,0,0.5)_64%,transparent_80%)]"

The crossover timing is the same trick as the ghost button, tuned longer for print: the label's colour transition is delayed 100ms so the flood overtakes it, instead of the text matching the rising edge's lightness and vanishing.

Reduced motion keeps the effect, drops the travel. The ink sits pre-scaled at its final size and only fades in — the state is still communicated, which is the rule the whole collection follows.

Make it yours

  • Flood origin is the mask's centre: 50%_112% rises from the baseline, 10%_50% spreads like a nib stroke.
  • Two-colour press: layer a second ink span with a different mask and a 90ms delay.
  • Invert to dark stock through --color-tb19-paper and --color-tb19-ink; the mask is colour-agnostic.
  • Swap the serif for your display face — keep the size at or above 1rem so the letterforms hold.
  • Drop the underline if the button sits inside prose, where it would read as a link.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • 620ms is the top of the acceptable range for an action control. Keep the leave transition faster than the enter.
  • The mask belongs on the ink layer, not the button — masking the button masks the label too.
  • Feathered edges lose contrast in the transition zone. The label must be legible against the paper and the ink.
  • Safari needs -webkit-mask-image; the CSS block declares it, because the utility emits the unprefixed property only.
  • Serif at small sizes on low-contrast paper is an accessibility trap: ≥1rem and ≥4.5:1.

Browser support

ChromeSafariFirefoxEdge
120+16.4+128+120+

The mask shorthand needs Chrome 120 / Safari 15.4 / Firefox 53, with the -webkit- shim in the CSS block. Without mask support the ink floods as a plain scaling rectangle — an acceptable fallback.
