What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Utilities: the magnet translate, the mercury gradient and its hover opacity, the ripple's position and trigger, the label's parallax. CSS: one keyframe, the stage backdrop, and the four pointer-variable defaults on .tb-15__btn — which must exist in the stylesheet so the button is correct before (and without) JS.
  • This is the pattern for every pointer-driven effect: JS writes variables, utilities read them inside calc(). Nothing about the port makes the JS longer, and the visuals are now inspectable in the element's class list.
  • motion-reduce:translate-x-0 motion-reduce:translate-y-0 replaces the CSS original's translate:0 0 !important. The variant wins on specificity order instead of force, which is the tidier mechanism.
  • group-[.is-rippling]: is the same class-based group variant used in demo 09. Two JS-driven one-shots, one idiom.

Demo: Tailwind Magnetic Mercury Ripple Button
Source: https://codefronts.com/components/tailwind-css-buttons/tailwind-magnetic-mercury-ripple-button/

The button leans toward your cursor like it is magnetised, a mercury highlight tracks the pointer across its surface, and clicks ripple from the exact point of contact. The JS writes four custom properties; every visual is a utility that reads them — the cleanest division of labour in the collection.

(() => {

    box = box || btn.getBoundingClientRect();
    const nx = (e.clientX - box.left) / box.width;
    const ny = (e.clientY - box.top) / box.height;
    btn.style.setProperty('--mx', (nx * 100).toFixed(2) + '%');
    btn.style.setProperty('--my', (ny * 100).toFixed(2) + '%');
    btn.style.setProperty('--dx', (nx - 0.5).toFixed(3));
    btn.style.setProperty('--dy', (ny - 0.5).toFixed(3));
  });
  btn.addEventListener('pointerleave', () => {
    box = null;
    btn.style.setProperty('--dx', '0');
    btn.style.setProperty('--dy', '0');
  });
  btn.addEventListener('click', () => {
    btn.classList.remove('is-rippling');
    void btn.offsetWidth; // restart the keyframes
    btn.classList.add('is-rippling');
  });
})();
```
How this works
JS publishes, CSS decides. The controller sets --mx/--my (percentages) and --dx/--dy (normalised offsets from centre) and nothing else. Three separate visuals then read the same four numbers: the magnet translate, the mercury gradient position, and the ripple origin.
class="translate-x-[calc(var(--dx)*var(--tb-15-pull))]
       translate-y-[calc(var(--dy)*var(--tb-15-pull)*0.6)]"
The pull is capped by construction. --dx is bounded to ±0.5 and --tb-15-pull is a px value, so the button can never wander far from its layout position — a magnet that drifts is a layout bug.
Keyboard users get a static button. The magnet binds to pointermove with a pointerType === 'mouse' guard; focus-visible: gets a real ring and no movement at all.
Make it yours
  • --tb-15-pull is the magnet strength: 10–14px feels premium, above 24px feels broken.
  • Spotlight instead of mercury: swap the gradient's accent stop for white at low alpha.
  • Ripple timing lives in --animate-tb15-ripple; 620ms matches Material's.
  • Combine with any other demo — the pointer variables are independent of the skin.
  • Touch: the pointerType guard already skips the magnet; the highlight still follows taps.
Gotchas — read before shipping
  • Cache getBoundingClientRect() on pointerenter, not per move, the moment you have a grid of these.
  • A magnetic button must not move under a keyboard user. Pointer events only.
  • Default --mx/--my to 50% or Enter/Space produces a ripple from the top-left corner.
  • motion-reduce: must disable the magnet and the ripple — small unexpected translations are a vestibular trigger.
  • touch-action-manipulation removes the 300ms tap delay; without it the ripple feels laggy on mobile.
