Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.
writing-modeandtext-orientationhave no utilities, so they stay arbitrary properties on the element they set.- UI upgrade from the CSS original: the kanji were rendered in Cormorant Garamond, which has no CJK glyphs, so browsers fell back to a random system font; Noto Serif JP now sets them as a proper Mincho.
- UI upgrade:
langattributes for correct glyph selection and screen-reader voices; a provenance strip; the vertical column stays beside the copy on phones instead of stacking into a 200px stub.

```How this works
Vertical is a property, not a rotation. writing-mode: vertical-rl lays glyphs top-to-bottom with columns flowing right-to-left — line breaking, punctuation and selection all behave natively, unlike a rotated block.
Language tagging matters. The headline carries lang=ja and the romanisation lang=ja-Latn, so browsers pick Japanese glyph variants and screen readers switch voices.
Make it yours
- Horizontal on phones: add
max-sm:[writing-mode:horizontal-tb]to the headline. - Change the seal characters (two kanji read top-to-bottom).
- Swap indigo for sumi black:
--color-ths17-ink: #1b1b1b.
Gotchas — read before shipping
text-orientation:uprightalso stands Latin letters upright; keep English out of the vertical column.- Vertical blocks have no intrinsic height limit — give the column a
min-h-*.
