Tailwind Inline Bullet-Dot Separator Breadcrumb

The classic article-header trail: serif text links divided by small centred bullets, with an italic current page. Two utilities carry the whole separator, and the port's only real change is that the bullet now belongs to the crumb that follows it.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • li:not(:last-child)::after became before: on the followers, which is the collection's convention and removes the need for a structural variant entirely.
  • Zero arbitrary properties beyond the glyph. Worth noting in a collection full of them: the oldest patterns port most cleanly.
  • UI change from the CSS original: the system serif stack was replaced with a real webfont loaded in setup, so the trail renders the same on Windows as on macOS — the original silently fell back to Times.

How this works

Smaller than the text, centred by flex. The bullet renders at 11px inside a 14.5px line and centres because the crumb is flex items-center — no vertical nudging, which is what a bare inline bullet usually needs.

Serif needs less decoration. Georgia-class faces carry hierarchy through weight and style, so the current crumb is simply italic and one lightness stop darker. No pill, no fill, no underline.

Everything is a utility. There is not one arbitrary property in this demo beyond the bullet's content, which is as it should be for a pattern this old.

Make it yours

  • Glyph: before:content-['\2022'] — middot \00B7, en dash \2013, or a slash all work with the same spacing.
  • Rhythm: before:mx-3.
  • Type: swap --font-tbc34-serif for any text face; the 14.5px size is tuned for a serif and would look large in a grotesque.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • A bullet at text size overwhelms the labels; 11px inside 14.5px is the ratio that reads as a divider.
  • Keep the bullet in a pseudo-element, not in the link text — the accessible name must not contain it.
  • Italic current pages are conventional in editorial contexts and confusing in product UI; use weight there instead.
