Tailwind Gradient Background Glow Breadcrumb Bar

A vivid gradient bar with a matching bloom beneath it: the glow is a blurred duplicate of the same gradient on a before: layer, and the current crumb's label is painted with a clipped white-to-lilac gradient. Bold, and the glow is one utility run rather than a second element.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • before:bg-[inherit] plus before:blur-* is the cheapest bloom in CSS, and as a utility run it sits directly under the gradient it copies — the coupling is visible.
  • isolate on the section is what makes -z-1 safe. Negative z-index without a local stacking context is the classic way to lose an element behind the page.
  • UI change from the CSS original: crumbs gained min-h-9 and the separator opacity rose from 70% to 75% white, which is where it stops disappearing into the lighter end of the gradient.

How this works

The glow inherits. before:bg-[inherit] copies the list's gradient onto the pseudo-element, which is then blurred and pushed down 8px. Change the bar's gradient and the bloom follows automatically — the alternative is declaring the gradient twice and watching them drift.

Negative z-index needs a stacking context. -z-1 puts the bloom behind its own parent, which only works because the section establishes the context. Without that the glow would disappear behind the page.

The current label is clipped gradient text — bg-clip-text plus text-transparent, the same pair as demo 19, here with a two-stop white-to-lilac so it stays legible on the saturated bar.

Make it yours

  • Gradient: the three stops in bg-linear-[100deg,...]; the bloom follows.
  • Bloom: before:blur-[18px] and before:opacity-70.
  • Animate it by adding a @theme animation that walks background-position — the bar is gradient-ready.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • before:bg-[inherit] is load-bearing; a literal second gradient will eventually mismatch the bar.
  • White text on a mid-lightness gradient is the contrast risk. These stops sit at oklch(0.6–0.68), which holds semibold 14px at AA — a lighter gradient would not.
  • pointer-events-none on the bloom, or it intercepts clicks near the bar's edge.
