Tailwind Holographic Shimmer Web3 Breadcrumb with Animated @property

A deep-space glass pill with a holo-card iridescence: a conic rainbow rotates under a masked diagonal ruling, both fading in on hover or focus. This is the collection's clearest example of the port's limit — @property and @keyframes cannot be utilities, so the animation stays CSS and the markup keeps only what it can hold.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • This demo is where the port stops being a translation. @property, two @keyframes blocks and one :has() relational rule stay in CSS; @theme exposes the animations as utilities so the markup still decides when they run.
  • Both blend layers, the mask, the conic gradient and the ruling all moved onto the list as before:/after: utilities — about forty classes. Long, and still preferable to four pseudo-element rules whose triggers lived three screens away.
  • UI change from the CSS original: the current crumb's border-image gradient underline was replaced with a solid holo-token border. border-image silently disables border-radius, which was clipping the pill's corner in the original.

How this works

What has to stay CSS. @property --tbc18-angle is what makes an angle animatable at all, and @keyframes cannot be expressed as a utility. Both live in the stylesheet; @theme then turns them into animate-* utilities so the markup can still say when they run.

What moves into the markup. The conic gradient itself, the repeating diagonal ruling, both blend modes, the mask that fades the ruling at its edges, the opacities, and the hover/focus triggers — all on the list as before: and after: utilities. The result is a pill whose entire resting and active appearance is readable on one element.

The dim-the-others trick. has-[a:hover]:[&_a:not(:hover):not([aria-current])]:opacity-70 is too much for one class, so the port keeps that single relational rule in CSS — an honest boundary rather than an unreadable utility.

Make it yours

  • Iridescence: the five holo colour stops in the before:bg-[conic-gradient(...)] value.
  • Intensity: before:opacity-35 when open, and the blur(6px) saturate(160%) filter.
  • Speed: the 6s and 3.6s in the two @theme animation entries.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • Without @property the angle is a plain string and the conic gradient will not animate at all — the fallback is a static rainbow, which is why the opacity is what fades in.
  • mix-blend-mode needs isolation:isolate on the list, or the blend reaches the page background.
  • Holo effects on dark glass must not carry the text: labels stay at full-opacity ink, and only the decorative layers blend.
  • motion-reduce: stops both animations but keeps the static shimmer — never nothing, never slower.

@property (Firefox 128) is the gate for the rotating conic gradient; mix-blend-mode, masks and backdrop-filter are Baseline. Without @property the shimmer is static.
