How this works

A ::after pseudo-element is positioned vertically at mid-text (top: 50%) and animates from scaleX(0) to scaleX(1). Wavy and dotted variants use background linear/radial repeating gradients instead of a solid fill. The multi-pass style staggers two pseudo-elements for a crossing effect.

Make it yours

  • Adjust --st-color, --st-thickness, and the vertical offset (top %) to nudge the line position. Use text-decoration-line: line-through as a fallback for reduced-motion.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • The ::after mid-line position needs top: 50% plus a negative margin-top of half the line height to sit on the cap-height rather than the x-height.
  • background-repeat: repeat-x on a gradient creates a dotted/dashed illusion without SVG.
  • Two staggered pseudo-elements for multi-pass require the ::before on the link too — ensure both are position:absolute and z-index layered correctly.
