How this works

Glassmorphism cards use background: rgba(255,255,255,.08), backdrop-filter: blur(12px), and a semi-transparent border: 1px solid rgba(255,255,255,.15) as the resting state. On hover, increasing the background opacity (rgba(255,255,255,.15)) and blur radius (blur(20px)) makes the glass appear to thicken and clarify — as if the panel is sliding closer to the viewer.

The edge glow variant transitions border-color from a faint white to a fully saturated accent colour, combined with a matching box-shadow: 0 0 20px var(--glow) that turns on at the same time. The blur-depth stack layers two pseudo-elements at different blur levels and z-positions, with the hover state increasing the backdrop-filter gap between them to exaggerate perceived depth. The reflective tinted glass uses a ::before with a diagonal linear-gradient at low opacity that shifts position on hover to simulate a specular reflection moving across the surface.

Make it yours

  • Increase glass clarity on hover by jumping backdrop-filter: blur() from 12px to 24px — larger differences feel more dramatic.
  • Tint the glass with a colour: change rgba(255,255,255,.08) to rgba(100,200,255,.08) for a blue-tinted glass panel.
  • The edge glow requires a matching box-shadow color — ensure --glow exactly matches border-color so the halo and border read as one continuous lit edge.
  • Pair with a subtle transform: scale(1.02) on hover to make the glass panel appear to slide toward the viewer as it clarifies.
  • Stack multiple cards with different z-index levels and slightly offset backdrop-filter values for a layered glass interface effect.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • backdrop-filter only blurs content rendered behind the element — it has no effect if the card's background is fully opaque (no transparency) or if there's nothing rendered behind it.
  • In Safari, backdrop-filter requires -webkit-backdrop-filter to be declared first for versions below 15.4 — always include both.
  • Animating backdrop-filter blur radius is GPU-expensive and can cause jank on low-power devices — prefer transitioning background opacity rather than the blur value itself.

Browser support

ChromeSafariFirefoxEdge
76+14+ (requires -webkit-)103+76+

backdrop-filter needs -webkit- prefix for Safari. Firefox added support in 103 — older versions show no blur.
