Tailwind Magnetic Border Drift Button

A subtle high-craft CTA where the outlined frame drifts toward the cursor as it approaches, lagging behind with an elastic settle, and the label drifts a fraction less for parallax. Restrained, premium, and the clearest case in the collection for keeping JavaScript to a pair of normalised numbers.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • The port moves every magnitude out of the script and into the class list: JS writes two unitless ratios, and translate-x-[calc(var(--dx,0)*14px)] decides what they mean. Retuning the pull is now a markup edit, which is the right place for a design value.
  • One controller replaced two near-identical IIFEs, because the only difference between the designs is a multiplier and those now live in the markup. The properties are written to both the button and the label so the parallax works whether or not the label inherits.
  • UI change from the CSS original: design A's hover fill and design B's shadow deepening are mirrored on focus-visible:, and the label carries motion-reduce:transition-none so reduced-motion users get an instant, non-springy state.

How this works

JavaScript writes ratios, not positions. The handler sets --dx and --dy to a value in the range -0.5 to 0.5 and stops there. Every decision about how far anything moves is a multiplier in the class list, which means the effect can be retuned without touching the script — the correct division of labour, and hard to see in the CSS original where both lived in the stylesheet.

Parallax is one number apart. Frame at 14px, label at 6px. Because both read the same normalised input, they cannot desynchronise; the depth is a ratio rather than two animations to keep in step.

The wrapper is the sensor. Padding on a wrapper, not the button, gives the effect its approach distance while leaving the click target exactly the size it looks. Design B pads 40px and pulls harder (18px/8px) because a filled button can carry more motion than a hairline outline.

Make it yours

  • Pull strength: the *14px / *18px multipliers — and their label twins, which should stay at roughly 45% of the frame's.
  • Approach distance: the wrapper's p-[34px].
  • Settle: the cubic-bezier's 1.56 overshoot; drop it to 1.0 for a corporate, non-springy version.
  • Design A fills on hover (hover:bg-tbh16a-edge hover:text-tbh16a-stage); design B deepens its shadow instead.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • The custom properties must be unitless and the utility must supply the unit via calc(). A JS-written '14px' makes the multiplier meaningless and the expression fragile.
  • Reset --dx/--dy to 0 on pointerleave, or the button stays leaning toward where the cursor left.
  • Cap the travel. At multipliers above ~24px the button drifts far enough from its apparent position that the click target feels wrong.
  • The controller returns early under prefers-reduced-motion, so the properties stay 0 and the calc() resolves to no movement — the fallback is structural rather than a second set of rules.

Custom properties in calc() and pointer events are universal; with JS disabled both buttons are static outlined/filled CTAs with working hover and focus states.
