What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Two content:attr(data-text) bands port into before:/after: runs with their clip windows stated inline, so the band geometry (which half, how much overlap) is finally visible next to the element it cuts.
  • The keyframes split transform and translate: design B's skew stays in transform while its jump uses translate, so the two can be tuned independently and neither is lost when the other changes.
  • UI change from the CSS original: both glitches now fire on focus-visible:, and design B's reduced-motion path hides the tear layer entirely instead of freezing it mid-skew, which previously left the button looking broken rather than still.

How this works

One attribute, two bands, zero extra DOM. Both pseudo-elements render the same data-text value, each clipped to one half of the button and tinted differently. The real <span> label sits at z-[1] in solid ink, so whatever the bands do the accessible, readable text is untouched.

Steps, not easing. steps(3) makes each band snap between three offsets. Smooth interpolation here reads as a wobble; the hard jump is what reads as signal corruption.

Design B tears instead of splitting. A single band that skews as it jumps, with its clip window moving between frames — a rolling tear rather than a two-colour split, and the better choice when the button sits next to other neon elements.

Make it yours

  • Band count: add a second pair of clipped pseudo layers on a nested element for a four-band glitch.
  • Sharpness: the steps(3) / steps(2) counts and the 400ms / 350ms durations.
  • Tints: --color-tbh17a-cyan and -mag. Keep both at full opacity; alpha-muted bands look like a rendering error rather than a glitch.
  • Always-on variant: move the animation off the hover variant onto the element for a continuously corrupted button.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • The base label must stay solid and above the bands, or the button becomes unreadable at every frame where the bands separate.
  • The bands' opaque background is load-bearing: it is what hides the base label inside each clip window and makes the split visible.
  • The two clip windows must tile the full height (0 0 55% 0 and 55% 0 0 0) with a slight overlap — a gap shows the base label as a bright seam.
  • Both bands are pseudo-elements, so they stay out of the accessibility tree; never build this with duplicated <span>s, which would triple the announced label.
