How this works

One rule, three columns. The object is a flex container that stacks by default and goes horizontal once its own container has room:

.column { container: cq-12-col / inline-size; }
.media  { display: flex; flex-direction: column; gap: 1rem; }

@container cq-12-col (min-width: 24em) {
  .media { flex-direction: row; }
  .media__fig { flex: 0 0 40%; }
}

What this replaces is the modifier class. The pattern used to require the author of each page to know which variant to apply, which meant the component's layout knowledge lived in every template that used it. Moving that decision into the component's own stylesheet is the actual win here — the visual result is one that flexbox could already produce.

Stack first, then enhance. The stacked direction is the default and the horizontal one is the query, which means an engine without container queries renders the narrow layout everywhere: correct, if plainer. Writing it the other way round leaves old engines with a horizontal object crushed into a 15rem column.

The trap: the figure needs a basis, not a width. flex: 0 0 40% keeps the image's share proportional as the container grows; a fixed width: 12rem makes it dominate at narrow widths and look lost at wide ones. Pair that with min-inline-size: 0 on the text side, or a long headline word will refuse to wrap and push the object wider than its container — which then changes the query result.

Make it yours

  • Move the single 24em threshold to change when the object goes horizontal.
  • Flip the figure to the trailing edge with flex-direction: row-reverse inside the query for an alternating list.
  • Change the figure's flex-basis from 40% to 28% for a thumbnail-style object rather than a split.
  • Add a second stage at min-width: 42em that promotes the object to a full-width lead with a larger crop.
  • Give each instance its own container-name if you need different thresholds in different regions.
  • Drag the third instance's handle to sweep through the whole range and find your own threshold.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • A fixed pixel width on the figure breaks the proportion at both ends; use flex-basis as a percentage so the split scales with the container.
  • Without min-inline-size: 0 on the text side, a long unbreakable word can widen the object past its container and flip the query back and forth.
  • Writing the horizontal layout as the default and the stack as the query leaves engines without container query support rendering a crushed horizontal object.
  • container-type on the media object itself cannot restyle the object — the column around it is the container.

Floor set by :has(), oklch(), color-mix(), backdrop-filter, @container, text-wrap as this demo is written. The core technique itself goes back further — Chrome 111+.

This needs nothing beyond @container with container-type: inline-size, Baseline since February 2023 (Chrome 105 / Safari 16 / Firefox 110); the Chrome and Firefox numbers quoted come from oklch() in the rule and accent colours, gated by @supports with sRGB hex declared first. Because the stacked layout is the default and the horizontal layout lives inside the query, an engine with no support renders every instance stacked — the correct narrow design, applied everywhere. flexbox, aspect-ratio and resize are all Baseline.
