Combining Container Queries with CSS Grid

auto-fit with minmax() decides how many columns fit; a container query on each item decides what each item looks like at the width it got. They answer different questions and compose cleanly. Not a Grid tutorial — the subject is the interaction, and the trap named at the end is putting container-type on the grid instead of the items.

How this works

Two questions, two mechanisms. Grid answers how many columns; the container query answers what the item does with the width it received:

.board { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(14rem, 1fr)); gap: 1rem; }
.board > li { container: cq-19-item / inline-size; }

@container cq-19-item (min-width: 18em) { .item { grid-template-columns: 3rem 1fr; } }

Neither one can do the other's job. auto-fit cannot restyle an item; a container query cannot decide how many columns the board has. Together they cover the whole responsive surface of a card grid with no media queries at all — which is why the two boards below need only one set of rules between them.

Where the widths actually come from. With auto-fit, cell width is the leftover space divided by the column count, so the same item can be 14rem in a three-column board and 22rem in a two-column one. Each item measures its own cell, so a narrow cell compacts while its wider sibling in another board expands.

The trap: container-type on the board. Put it on the grid and every item queries the same number — the board's inline size — so a three-column row and a one-column row render identically. The trap panel below shows exactly that. Keep the container on the item, and use minmax(0, 1fr) rather than 1fr so a long line of content cannot widen its own cell and change the answer it gets.

Make it yours

  • Change the minmax() minimum to control how eagerly the board adds columns; the items need no edits.
  • Retune the item threshold (18em) independently of the column logic — that separation is the point.
  • Swap auto-fit for auto-fill to keep empty tracks; item queries behave identically either way.
  • Add a second item stage at min-width: 26em for a wide-cell treatment with a description line.
  • Give one item grid-column: span 2 and watch its own query answer change with its new cell width.
  • Set the board's own container-name and query it for board-level decisions such as gap size — a legitimate use of a container on the grid, alongside per-item containers.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • container-type on the grid instead of the grid items gives every item the same measurement, so per-item adaptation silently stops working.
  • A bare 1fr track has an auto minimum; long content can widen the cell and change what the item's own query answers. Use minmax(0, 1fr).
  • auto-fit collapses empty tracks, so with few items a cell can be far wider than minmax() suggests — check your item thresholds against the one-item case.
  • An item spanning two columns gets a much wider cell than its siblings, which is correct but often unexpected the first time an item query fires differently inside the same board.

Browser support

ChromeSafariFirefoxEdge
111+16+113+111+

Grid with auto-fit and minmax() is Baseline since 2017; the per-item adaptation needs @container and container-type: inline-size, Baseline since February 2023 (Chrome 105 / Safari 16 / Firefox 110). The Chrome and Firefox floors above are set by oklch(), used for the item accent hues behind @supports with sRGB hex declared first. Without container query support the boards still lay out correctly — auto-fit does not depend on the query — and every item keeps the compact layout declared before the query.
