A mail-order catalogue page: ruled columns, small caps, halftone product plates and a printed price block with the order code set in monospace. The typographic decisions are the demo — catalogue type was small, tightly leaded and heavily tracked in the labels, and only some of those choices survive contact with an accessibility audit unchanged.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • The webfonts load as <link> tags in setup, not as an @import in the stylesheet — Tailwind emits user @import rules after its own layers, where the browser drops them.
  • Small caps is the one place this port is clumsier than the CSS version: three utilities (uppercase, tracking, and the arbitrary font-variant-caps) express one intention, and nothing groups them.
  • The halftone screen is two arbitrary properties — the gradient and the background size — both reading --twr-19-dot, so the whole grid rescreens from one value.
  • Every ruled hairline is a border-t utility on the element it separates, which makes the ruling structure visible in the markup rather than inferred from a stylesheet.
  • The price block is three spans at different sizes and baselines rather than a , so the accessible reading stays a single number.
  • minmax(min(100%,16rem),1fr) is the safe auto-fit track: the inner min() is what stops the grid overflowing below the track floor.
  • Body copy is deliberately larger and darker than the period would have set it. The relationships are period-correct; the absolute values are readable.

How this works

Catalogue type is small, tight and heavily tracked in the labels. Body copy ran at about 9 or 10 point, leaded tightly to fit the column, with the product name in small caps and generous letter-spacing. The proportions are easy to reproduce; the absolute size is where the trouble starts.

The accessibility failure this style invites, named. A period catalogue set body text at the equivalent of 11px with 1.15 leading in mid-grey ink on cream — a contrast failure and a legibility failure at once. This port keeps the tracking, the small caps, the serif and the ruled structure, and raises body copy to text-[0.95rem] with leading-relaxed and an ink dark enough to clear 4.5:1 on the cream. The page still reads as a catalogue because the relationships are period-correct, not the absolute values.

Small caps need a fallback, and it is the one place utilities are slightly awkward. [font-variant-caps:all-small-caps] does nothing silently in a font without the feature, leaving normal lowercase. The fix is to also apply uppercase and tracking, so the label reads as a label either way — three utilities describing one intention, which is worth a comment in a real codebase.

class="uppercase tracking-[var(--twr-19-track)]
       [font-variant-caps:all-small-caps]"

Halftone is the honest way to place a photograph here. A catalogue plate was a screened image: a grid of dots printed in one or two inks. A repeating radial gradient reproduces the texture at any size with no asset, and it reads clearly as a placeholder — the correct behaviour for a layout demo. Drop a real photograph in later and keep the screen as a low-opacity overlay.

The price block is doing typographic work. Currency sign smaller and raised, pounds large, pence as a superior figure, order code beneath in monospace. That arrangement let a reader scan forty items by price alone, and it is a reminder that print hierarchy came almost entirely from size and position, because a second ink cost money — the same constraint the one-bit interfaces elsewhere in this collection worked under.

Make it yours

  • Change --twr-19-dot on the section; 4px reads as newsprint, 8px as a coarse catalogue screen.
  • Swap the paper and ink tokens for a two-ink catalogue — cream with a red second ink is the classic pairing.
  • Adjust --twr-19-track for the label tracking; small caps need more of it than lowercase does.
  • Change the plate to aspect-[3/4] for portrait garment shots instead of square plates.
  • Force two columns at all widths by replacing the auto-fit track with grid-cols-2 for a larger-format feel.
  • Replace a plate with a real image and keep the dot screen as a low-opacity overlay on top of it.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • Reproducing period type sizes literally produces a page below 4.5:1 and under 12px. Keep the proportions and raise the absolute values.
  • [font-variant-caps:all-small-caps] fails silently in fonts without the feature. Always pair it with uppercase and tracking.
  • Heavy letter-spacing on body copy — not just labels — measurably slows reading. Track the small caps and leave the sentences alone.
  • A dense halftone at a small dot pitch is an expensive tiled paint across a full product grid. Keep the pitch at 4px or above.
  • minmax(min(100%,16rem),1fr) rather than minmax(16rem,1fr): without the inner min() the grid overflows below 16rem instead of collapsing to one column.
  • Do not put the price's superior pence in a — it changes the accessible reading of the number. Two spans at different sizes keep it a single price.

repeating-radial-gradient and font-variant-caps are Baseline since 2016, with the uppercase-plus-tracking fallback covering fonts lacking the OpenType feature. Tailwind v4's generated sheet sets the floor at Chrome 111+, Safari 16.4+, Firefox 128+; the catalogue layout itself is grid and hairline borders and works far further back.
