What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

 • group-aria-expanded: is the port's headline: Tailwind ships ARIA-attribute variants, so the chevron rotation keys off the accessibility state directly. Style and semantics are now the same source of truth, and a script bug that forgets the attribute is immediately visible.
 • has-[[aria-expanded=true]]: on the item is the container half of the same idea — the nested bracket syntax is ugly, and it is still better than a state class the script has to remember to add.
 • One rule stayed in CSS and it is instructive: the panel's open height depends on a previous sibling's descendant attribute. Tailwind has no backwards-sibling variant, and inventing one would be worse than four lines of CSS.
 • UI upgrade from the CSS original: muted copy oklch(0.7) → 0.8 and the panel 0.2 → 0.24; answers move from about 3.9:1 to 5.7:1, which matters most in the demo whose subject is accessibility.
 • UI upgrade: the focus ring is outline-3 with an inset offset so it is never clipped by the card, and the open item now carries a tinted lift shadow in addition to the border tint — state is no longer conveyed by a 1px border alone.

How this works

The markup contract, per the spec. A heading gives document structure (screen-reader users navigate by headings more than any other method); the button inside it carries operability and announces collapsed or expanded; the panel is a role="region" labelled by its button, so AT users can ask where they are from inside a long answer.

Why the ARIA-keyed variants matter. Styling from aria-expanded rather than a class is not a party trick: it makes drift structurally impossible. If the script forgets to update the attribute, the chevron does not rotate and the border does not tint — the bug becomes visible instead of silent, which is exactly what you want in an audited component.

The keyboard layer is deliberately narrow. Arrows, Home and End move focus between headers only; activation stays with Enter and Space. Browsing and activating are separate acts — a widget that opens panels while you survey them announces a wall of content nobody asked for.

When to build this instead of <details>: when you need heading-level navigation, aria-controls relationships, or APG-spec arrow traversal. Enterprise accessibility audits ask for this pattern by name. For a marketing FAQ, demo 02's native disclosure is lighter and also accessible.

Make it yours

 • Heading level: change the h3s to match your outline — the ARIA wiring is level-agnostic.
 • Exclusive mode: set aria-expanded="false" on siblings in the click handler; the ARIA pattern permits both modes.
 • Focus ring: keep it at outline-3. Never dim it to match the visual design — it is the keyboard user's cursor.
 • Panel animation: the grid-rows technique here is optional; plain hidden toggling is equally spec-correct and simpler.

Gotchas — read before shipping

 • aria-expanded lives on the BUTTON, not the heading or the panel — misplacement is the most common audit finding in accordions.
 • Do not add role="button" to the heading or make the h3 clickable. The heading wraps a real button; nesting interactive semantics breaks both.
 • Arrow keys must not toggle panels while cycling. Combined move-and-open confuses screen-reader users badly.
 • Do not put role="region" on more than about six panels per page — landmark proliferation makes the AT rotor useless. Keep aria-labelledby and drop the role past that.

ARIA attributes plus vanilla JS run everywhere, including old AT stacks — that is the point of this pattern. The floor is Tailwind v4's generated sheet; the semantics degrade to nothing.
