Tailwind Dark Mode Gradient Text Toggle

One card, two palettes: vivid neon gradients on dark, rich jewel tones on light. Because v4 utilities reference theme variables, the script just flips data-theme and a scoped rule re-points every --color-ttg20-* — headline, logo, chips and toggle all follow. It honours prefers-color-scheme on first load and remembers the choice.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Two duplicated custom-property blocks plus a --force-dark class became one data-theme attribute and one override rule; the media-query block only applies when no choice has been made.
  • The --moon-op/--sun-op opacity trick became group-data-[theme=light]/t: variants on real SVG icons (the ☾/☀ glyphs rendered as emoji on some platforms).
  • UI upgrade: the toggle is a labelled pill with aria-pressed, the choice persists across reloads, and surfaces cross-fade with transition-colors.
  • Contrast fix: dark-mode muted copy was 50% alpha (≈4:1); it is now a solid 8.9:1 tint, and light-mode gradient stops sit at L 0.5 for ≥5:1.

Demo: Tailwind Dark Mode Gradient Text Toggle
Source: https://codefronts.com/motion/tailwind-css-text-gradient/tailwind-dark-mode-gradient-text-toggle/

One card, two palettes: vivid neon gradients on dark, rich jewel tones on light. Because v4 utilities reference theme variables, the script just flips data-theme and a scoped rule re-points every --color-ttg20-* &mdash; headline, logo, chips and toggle all follow. It honours prefers-color-scheme on first load and remembers the choice.

How this works

Tokens are variables. In v4, from-ttg20-a compiles to --tw-gradient-from: var(--color-ttg20-a). Redefine the variable in a scoped rule and every utility that uses it updates:

.ttg-20[data-theme='light'] {
  --color-ttg20-a: oklch(0.5 0.22 275);
  --color-ttg20-bg: oklch(0.98 0.005 260);  /* … */
}

So the markup stays one class list for both modes; there are no dark: duplicates.

Why different palettes. Dark grounds want light, high-lightness stops (L ≈ 0.8); light grounds want deeper jewel tones (L ≈ 0.5) to keep 4.5:1. Same hues, different lightness.

The script reads prefers-color-scheme, applies any saved preference, and updates aria-pressed on toggle.

Make it yours

  • Use Tailwind's own dark:: declare @custom-variant dark (&:where([data-theme=dark], [data-theme=dark] *)); and keep the same data attribute.
  • Smooth colour crossfade: add transition-colors duration-300 on surfaces (gradients swap instantly).
  • A third theme: add a [data-theme='contrast'] rule and cycle through three values.
  • Site-wide: put the attribute on <html> and set it from an inline head script to avoid a flash.

Gotchas — read before shipping

  • Gradient stops can't cross-fade between themes without @property registration; Tailwind registers --tw-gradient-*, but the token swap itself is instant.
  • Set the initial theme before first paint in production (inline head script), or users see a flash of the wrong mode.
  • If you use @theme inline, utilities inline the literal values and the override trick stops working.

Without JS the card follows prefers-color-scheme via the CSS media rule.
