Tailwind Credit Card Input

Auto-formatted card number with brand-aware accent. The brand lives in a data-brand attribute and every colour reads it as a variant — and unlike the original, reformatting no longer throws your caret to the end of the field.

What changed in the port

Which parts became utilities, which stayed CSS, and why.

  • Two bugs fixed. The digit regex was double-escaped and matched literal backslashes; and the caret jumped to the end on every keystroke — the original lists that as a gotcha and ships it anyway. Both handled.
  • Four [data-brand="…"] .badge rule blocks become group-data-[brand=…]: utilities in the badge's own class list.
  • tabular-nums and a PCI warning visible in the UI, not just in the docs.

      var digitsBefore = input.value.slice(0, caret).replace(/\D/g, '').length;
      var digits = input.value.replace(/\D/g, '').slice(0, 19);

      var info = detect(digits);
      if (info[0]) wrap.setAttribute('data-brand', info[0]);
      else wrap.removeAttribute('data-brand');
      if (badge) badge.textContent = info[1];
    });
  });
})();
```
How this works
Strip, group, re-place the caret. Each keystroke rebuilds the value, so the handler has to put the cursor back where the user's digits left it:
var before = input.value.slice(0, input.selectionStart).replace(/\D/g, '').length;
input.value = digits.match(/.{1,4}/g).join(' ');
// walk forward past 'before' digits to find the new index
Brand is a BIN prefix. ^4 Visa, ^5[1-5]|^2[2-7] Mastercard, ^3[47] Amex, ^6(011|5) Discover. That tells you what logo to show, and nothing at all about whether the number is real.
Make it yours
  • More brands: JCB ^35, Diners ^3[0689], UnionPay ^62.
  • Logos: swap the text badge for an SVG keyed off data-brand.
  • Amex grouping: 4-6-5, not 4-4-4-4 — special-case the format when the brand is amex.
  • Luhn: check on blur to catch typos before submit, without blocking autofill.
Gotchas — read before shipping
  • PCI DSS: never let a raw PAN reach your server. Ship this inside Stripe Elements, Braintree Hosted Fields or an Adyen iframe. This demo is styling education.
  • Reformatting on every keystroke moves the caret unless you restore it — which is why the restore code is in the demo rather than in the gotcha list.
  • BIN detection is not validation. A card starting with 4 and sixteen digits of nonsense is still nonsense.
